Morgan Rogers to Chelsea: what £117m means for your fantasy team

Wondering whether the most expensive British player ever belongs in your fantasy team? Short answer: nobody can tell you yet, because his manager started three weeks ago.

Chelsea confirmed Morgan Rogers on Tuesday for £117m. Gameweek 1 is Friday 21 August, so you have four weeks to work out whether this is a pick or a trap.

The quick version:

• Rogers is good. Chelsea's attack is crowded. Those two facts are in a fight.
• Xabi Alonso is the whole story. New manager, no Premier League shape yet, ten forwards to sort out.
• The safer fantasy move from this deal is Ollie Watkins, not Rogers.

The deal, quickly

£117m fixed, no add-ons, on a six-year contract with an option for a seventh.

It beats the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this month, so the British record has now moved twice in three weeks. It is also Chelsea's biggest ever outlay, past the £115m that brought Moises Caicedo from Brighton in 2023.

Arsenal were in for him too and stopped at around £80m, which tells you roughly what the rest of the market thought he was worth.

Verdict: a real player at a silly price. The price is Chelsea's problem, not yours.

What Rogers actually gives you

Ten goals and six assists in 37 Premier League games last season. Sixteen returns from an attacking midfielder is a proper haul, and he did it in a Villa side that was not drowning in chances.

He took 84 shots. That volume is the thing fantasy managers should care about, because shots repeat and luck does not.

The catch is where those numbers came from. At Villa he was the plan. Everything went through him.

Verdict: the underlying numbers are strong enough to trust. The role is not confirmed enough to buy.

The bit everyone is skipping: Xabi Alonso

Chelsea have a new manager. Alonso was appointed in May and only formally started on 1 July, on a four-year deal, after Chelsea got through Enzo Maresca and then Liam Rosenior inside a single season.

That matters more than the fee. You are not buying Rogers, you are buying a guess about a manager with no Premier League track record at this club.

Two things we do know. At Leverkusen, Alonso's best work came in a 3-4-2-1 with two attacking midfielders tucked in behind the striker. And Rogers is reported to have been given assurances about minutes on the left.

Read those together and the version where Rogers and Cole Palmer both start, as the two tens, is very much alive. That is the fantasy jackpot outcome. It is also one of at least three shapes Alonso could pick.

Verdict: watch the pre-season friendlies, not the price tag. The team sheet is the only thing that settles this.

Chelsea's attack is a traffic jam

Here is the queue Rogers has just joined:

Ten players for roughly four attacking spots.

Pay £117m and you will play, but "playing" at Chelsea has recently meant sixty-five minutes and a substitution, which is death in fantasy. Whether Alonso changes that is the single biggest unknown of the summer.

Verdict: avoid every Chelsea attacker except Palmer until the team sheets tell you something.

The better pick is at Villa

This is the bit most people will miss.

Villa have just sold the player who created most of what they made. What is left up front is Ollie Watkins and Tammy Abraham, and Watkins is the one who takes the shots.

Unai Emery is still there, which is the important half of this. Same manager, same system, one fewer creator. When a team loses its creator, the striker does not usually score less. He gets more of the ball and a bigger share of a smaller pie.

Villa also open away at Brighton on Sunday 23 August, a fixture you can plan around.

Verdict: Watkins is the value pick born out of this deal, and he will be cheaper than anyone at Chelsea.

The fixture detail nobody mentions

Chelsea play Fulham on Monday 24 August at 20:00. That is the final match of the opening weekend.

If you own Chelsea players, your Gameweek 1 is not over until Monday night. Your league table will look settled on Sunday and then move.

Villa are on the Sunday afternoon. Arsenal open the whole season against Coventry on the Friday.

Verdict: if you want to know your score on Saturday, do not stack Chelsea.

Rumours, quarantined

• Alejandro Garnacho to Villa. Talks reported after the Rogers fee was agreed. Do not draft off it.
• Villa's replacement creator. Nothing confirmed. The money is there, the player is not.
